New to African Cichlids

So we have a 70 gallon tank and new to African Cichlids. We just started with two peacock cichlids and one is already chasing the other around the tank. Mind you. They both came out of the same 20G tank at the fish store. Someone told me about the one or six rule. Either you Have only peacock or 6. is this true and how many females should we get. The plan is to get 12 cichlids total. Also, I get one person telling me that we can only keep African and not mix with other type while someone else said it is fine to mix. It has got us so confused. Any advice would help. Thanks.

Your best bet is to stick with all males but if you add females you'd want 2-3 or more females for every male. You'll need a lot of places for them to hide. Overstocking helps a lot with aggression. How many fish were in the 20 gallon tank they were in? Welcome to the forum.

Ok. It was in the fish store and there was at least 5 peacocks in that little tank. Can I mix Africans with South America? And how many fish can I get into a 70g tank. we are going get more hiding places for the fish.

I've mixed African and South Americans before but it's best not to. What kind of filter(s) are you running? With good filtration you should be able to have around 12-15 Peacocks. I have about 30 OB Peacocks and a few Mbuna in my 125 gallon tank with a Fluval FX6 and 2 XL sponge filters. I have a 55 gallon tank with 12 OB Peacocks and a FX6 filter. There's not a lot of aggression in either tank. They do chase each other occasionally but I've never seen any actual fighting.

Ok. we will do that. For now we only have a hanging filter for 100g. The fishes right now are only babies or very young juveniles. Only a couple of inches each. We plan to get a better filter once they grow more. We also feed them every other day.
we have always had saltwater tanks and this is our first fresh water tank

Just remember as you add fish try to keep them close to the same size and add 2 to 3 at a time and you should be good to go. I'd consider a Fluval FX5 or FX6 filter when you're ready to upgrade.
