Flashing or Just a Scratch

Hello all I have started my first cichlid tank (mbuna) and noticing random flashing on the substrate (black sand). I have hard well water, I cycled the tank before adding fish. api strip says gh 180 kh 180. I have 8 yellow Labs and 12 Demasoni in a 75 gallon tank. How do I know if I should medicate. Its not like the fis are constantly do this you have to sit and watch and you will catch one do it. I don't want to over react and medicate. Could this just be a random scratch. Thanks for any advise.

It could be Ich, are all of the fish flashing? What is your water temperature? Whenever I suspect Ich in any of my Cichlid aquariums I turn the heat up slowly until the water reaches 86-88 degrees and leave it set there 10 days then slowly lower the temperature back to it's normal range. I keep my water at 82 degrees and it helps keep my aquariums Ich free.
Welcome to the forum.

I would say no not all of them do it. They are very active and its hard to pin point who does it. I run the temp at 80. I think I will try increasing the temp first. Thank you so much!

Turn the heater up 1-2 degrees at a time and once the water gets to 86-88 leave it there for 10 days then slowly go back down to 80. The Chiclids can handle the higher water temperature with no problems.
